Doctrines of Demons

by Christine Egbert

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons…1Ti 4:1

Of all the crazy things I have heard preached by so-called men of God over the years, claiming that Yeshua nailed the LAW to the cross has to be the most twisted. But this is what they preach because this is what they were taught. Not by Scripture, but in their seminaries. The minute they find out you keep the 7th day Sabbath, eat according to God’s dietary laws, keep his Feast Days, and shun holidays of pagan origin, they will assail you with out of context scriptures. They will claim that those LAWS are for the Jews. But Scripture says there is ONE LAW for the native-born and the stranger who dwells among you.” (Exodus 12:49).

And Romans 2:12-13 says this:

For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified.)

But these blind guides (see Matt 15:14) will try to convince you that the only law you need to keep in the New Covenant is to love God and your neighbor. They must think that God is a politician, one who solves sin problems by legalizing sin. (For we know that sin is transgression of the Law)  After all, they believe God wrote His Law on our hearts in the New Covenant so we could continue to break it.  How does that even make sense?

Acts 15:19 is often cited as proof that Gentile believers do not need to keep the Law of Moses. Which is actually the LAW of YHVH that He gave to Moses.  The same LAW that is for the native born and the stranger among you. (Exodus 12:49)

Let’s read it. (Act 15:19-20)

“Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.”

If they would read verse 21 they would realize that they knew these new believers would gradually learn and obey the rest of God’s instructions over time when they went to Synagogue on the Sabbath.  It says, “For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”  Did they expect the new converts to edit out the rest of what they would hear when the Torah was read, and adhere only to the four preliminary instructions given so that they might fellowship at the synagogue?

Acts 15:19 does not make it okay for new Gentile believers to murder, steal, covet, or eat abominable things. Do they think that when Yeshua said he came to fulfill the law that he meant he abolished it? He just warned them not to think that–(Matthew 5:17).

For some strange reason they choose to ignore his warning that those who break and teach others to break the least of his commandments will be least in the Kingdom, but that those who keep and teach others to keep them will be great! They pay no attention to scriptures warning against lawlessness. Have they never read the Scripture that teaches that sin is the transgression of the law? (1 John 3:4) Do they not know that the Antichrist is called the Lawless one? (2 Thes 2:9).

Have they never read that Yeshua redeemed us from all lawlessness (anomia in the Greek) to purify a special people for Himself who are zealous for good works? (Tit 2:14) Don’t they know that Yeshua is the same yesterday, today, and forever? (Heb 13:8)

Yeshua came to do his father’s will, to speak his father’s words. God said in Leviticus 11: 7-8, that swine was unclean and not fit to eat. God is not a man. He does not lie. He is not human, and he does not change his mind. (Num 23:19) But to justify their appetite for eating scavengers like swine and shrimp, they falsely claim that in Mark 7:1-23 Yeshua declared all foods clean. He wasn’t even talking about food! He was talking about hand washing! It was an oral (manmade, not God ordained) law of the Pharisees.

Have they not read that God sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh…to condemn sin in the flesh, so that the righteous demands of the Law might be fulfilled in us (those not walking according to flesh, but according to Spirit)? (Rom 8:3-4).

They falsely accuse Paul of teaching that Christians no longer have to keep the law because we are under grace. When in fact what he said was: “Sin shall not lord it over you, for you are not under Law, but under grace.” He then went on in the very next verse to ask: “Shall we sin because we are not under Law, but under grace?” And he answered, “Let it not be! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves as slaves for obedience, you are slaves to whom you obey, whether of sin to death, or obedience to righteousness?” (Rom 6:14-16)

These blind guides love to quote: “Christ is the end of the Law!” But the word translated as end is “tello.” According to Strong’s Greek dictionary tello means “to set out for a definite point or goal.” A more accurate, less biased, translation would read, “Christ is the goal of the Law!”

The problem is, like Peter said, (II Peter 3:16-17) Paul’s epistles are often hard to understand, and the unlearned (in the law) and the unsettled pervert them as they do other scriptures to their own destruction. Peter then warns the reader not to be led away by the error of the lawless.

Those lawless ones love to take Paul out of context, especially in the book of Galatians. But nowhere in Scripture does Paul teach against keeping the law. And he said so categorically in Acts 25:7-8, when some Jews falsely accused him in court. What Paul teaches against is works-based righteousness–keeping the law in order to be saved. But you can’t be saved except by grace through faith!

Then once you are saved, once you are in the New Covenant and God’s laws are written on your heart, once you are walking by the Spirit, you fulfill the righteous requirements of the law out of obedience. The mind of the flesh is enmity towards God. It’s not subjected to the Laws of God. And those in the flesh are not able to please God. (Rom 8:7-8)

In Matthew 22:40, Yeshua said that all of the commandments hang on love God and love your neighbor. Blind guides will try to persuade you that obedience to this can be met by having a warm mushy feeling toward God and your fellow man. And after that, do whatever you wish because you are not under the law but under grace. But that is perversion!

I John 5:2-3 says: “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”

And II John 1:5-6 says this: “And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment that, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.”

According to Scripture the only way to love God and to love your fellow man is to keep God’s commandments. And you don’t do it to get saved, but because you are saved. In God’s way of thinking, saving faith is not mere mental assent. Saving faith gives one a heart to obey. There is a connection between disobedience and unbelief. Consider the following passage:

“Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” (Heb 3:15-19)

Do not be deterred by those blind guides and their doctrines of demons. God’s LAW is eternal. When we keep it we are blessed. Having saving faith in Yeshua, and a heart to keep God’s commandments makes you a member of the remnant!

Rev 12:17  And the dragon was enraged over the woman, and went away to make war with the rest of her seed, those keeping the commandments of God, and having the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Rev_22:14  Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

  1. I think many people need to realize (and you do mention it in your article) that no person will ever be saved OR maintain their salvation by works. Each and every one of us break the first commandment every day. Can any of us claim we have loved the Lord with ALL our heart, ALL our soul, ALL our mind, ALL our strength every moment of every day. No way. But being born again, we definitely are changed by God’s Spirit in us and seek to be conformed to the image of Christ.
Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Then, Abraham demonstrated his faith by obeying God and attempting to sacrifice Isaac. Remember the thief on the cross? He was saved and had no time to do any good work. He knew Christ was the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
I am a Christian but I never I think, well I can do whatever I want now, I’m saved. God forbid. Rather, what can I do now that God is my Father! Be blessed everyone

  2. Excellent article; however, for the new Hebrew roots person, I would like to see the “Law” better defined as the Torah. I know defining “the law” as I read Paul’s letters was a stumbling block for me because I was never taught the “law” was the Torah!! Now, I can understand his letters so much better!!

  3. Awsome. I have held seveall of these beliefs but I was not exactly cretain of their origin.the unclean food is a particular one. I have heard alot of reasons given here and it is very nice to know exactly why we are supposed to keep the original commandments rather then just the few the new comers to Christianity received from the council.

  4. Can you explain why the lack of reference to Peter’s vision and the word from The Lord to “Kill and Eat”? There was clear intent by The Lord to put away dietary and social laws that would otherwise have prohibited Peter and those that followed from bringing the gospel to the gentile nations. Paul also speaks to the issue of food offered to idols. You mention dietary laws and I would like you to explain your rationale on this issue which has lead a number of divisions in the body between Jewish root oriented peoples. I believe the individual who chooses to follow kosher laws as a form of worship! walk! and deeper understanding of what these various laws speak to within our spiritual walk are commendable! However, I feel far to many Messianic believers are sucked into a legalistic interpretation and, as Paul would warn against, become divisive and judgemental against those who choose not to follow dietary laws, whether gentile or Jew. Thank you for your time. Shalom.

    • Peter himself gave the interpretation of his vision as pertaining to Gentiles. Not to mention, all dreams and visions in the scripture are SYMBOLIC! I suggest you read my article Swine’s Blood on the Altar.
